LED Lamp Characteristic Basics
There are three important characteristics of light output that generally define who a lamp will look to the eye, which are Colour Temperature, Lumens, and Colour Rendering Index (CRI). Understanding Colour Temperature, Lumens, and CRI is essential for making informed decisions about lighting. Here’s a brief tutorial on each of these concepts:
Colour Temperature:
Definition: Colour temperature measures the hue of a light source, expressed in Kelvin (K). It describes whether the light appears warm, neutral, or cool.

Warm White (Below 3000K): Emits a soft, yellowish light that is comfortable and inviting. Ideal for landscapes, residential areas, living rooms, and bedrooms.

Neutral White (3000K - 4000K): Produces a balanced white light that resembles daylight. Good for workspaces, kitchens, and retail areas.

Cool White (Above 4000K): Offers a bluish tint resembling daylight. Suitable for task lighting, offices, or environments where clarity and alertness are important.
Generally in Landscape Lighting a warmer white is often used to provide a welcoming and warm atmosphere. 2700K-3000K is most common for this purpose.
Lumens:
Definition: Lumens (LM) measure the amount of visible light emitted by a light source. It indicates the brightness of the light that a bulb produces.

Higher Lumens = Brighter Light: For example, a standard LED light bulb may produce between 800 and 1600 lumens, while flood lights can produce thousands of lumens.

Lower Lumens = Dimmer Light: Used for ambient or accent lighting where less brightness is desired.
Landscape Lighting Application: Generally most Landscape Lighting fixtures will produce between 100 LM (for smaller spaces and applications), and 800 to 1,000 for higher outputs common for larger Well Lights and Flood Lights.
Colour Rendering Index (CRI):
Definition: The Colour Rendering Index measures how accurately a light source reproduces the colours of objects compared to natural light. CRI is rated on a scale of 0 to 100.

CRI of 90-100: Excellent colour rendering; ideal for settings where colour perception is crucial, such as galleries, art studios, and retail spaces.

CRI of 80-89: Good colour rendering; satisfactory for most indoor and outdoor lighting applications.

CRI Below 80: Poor colour rendering, leading to distortion of colours; may be acceptable for utility or security lighting, but not for areas where aesthetics matter.
Landscape Lighting Application: A CRI between 80-90 is generally very good for Landscape Lighting applications as most areas being lit tend to lack vibrant colours requiring a high degree of colour rendering.
